Personal Statement
I love reading books. I love reading so much that in middle school the librarians made up a special "Reader" award for me. I often find that the first question I ask people is "What are you reading"? Whenever I read a really good book, I just cannot wait to tell someone about it! I get especially excited when other people really like books that I have recommended for them.
Right now I am working on my master of library and information studies degree because I want to be an elementary school librarian. As crazy as it might seem, I fantasize about running my own school library one day. I love the idea of starting a Boys Read program or doing booktalks with teachers. I really, REALLY want to be the kind of librarian that creates an environment that invites EVERYONE to visit the library often and want to stay.
In my mind, it has been the job of the librarian to teach information literacy, help teachers understand various technologies, and think of new and creative ways to integrate technology into the curriculum. I would love to create an entry for a virtual science fair and eventually help to run a school wide one. There are so many exciting things that technology can do.
I love teaching either in the classroom or in the library. I love watching a child's face light up when they finally understand something or hearing them talk excitedly about a lesson. I feel that my work in the libraries has really helped me to become a more organized teacher, and that my work as a teacher has helped me to become a more informed librarian. More than anything else I really want to show students, parents, and teachers that school is fun!
